We haven’t seen or heard the cats fighting for a few days. They must be very happy Bibi and Pedro are feeding them. Maybe they are never angry and hungry anymore. It’s summertime now so they are not cold. Most of them are sort of orange stripy colored.
The garden keeps growing and growing and growing. Pedro’s tomato plants are already like bushes. The pea shoots are growing along the sides of the fence climbing very high every day. The leaves of wild strawberries even actually grew some tiny wild strawberries on them. We get arugula, spinach and parsley every day now.
We dance when we play in the garden. It’s called binky hops when rabbits are happy and dance.
Our mint already is spreading into Sara’s family’s side. Those children are squealing happy sounds because they already have big tall sunflowers. Their food is starting to grow. Sara sometimes goes to ask Pedro for help even when she can do things herself. Because it’s more fun together.
A bee was buzzing around their sunflowers. Sara’s little brother said maybe he should become a bee keeper. He likes worms and now he likes bees.
There is a family on the other side of them. There is an older girl there named Sook. She asked Sara about why everything is so blooming here in our three backyards.
Sook said: “It never looked like this before. What is the secret?” Sara told her it’s because of our magic pellets.
Sook knocked on our door and wanted to meet us and take some magic pellets home with her. She was nice. Boxer and I let her pet us. Bella was too shy. She said the Korean word for rabbit is tokki. Bibi said it sounds like the Swedish word for crazy. They laughed.
Bibi said: “Here is a little bag of today’s magic pellets. Just sprinkle them where you want to grow anything. What do you want to plant?”
Sook said she wants to take them to the community garden where she helps every weekend. It is just around the corner on Lafayette Ave.
She said “I also want to grow herbs for tea someday. Like mint and chamomile, and a special kind of basil called holy basil. Thank you and your rabbits for the magic pellets.”
Bibi said: “You can come back as many times as you like. I think you can start growing your special herbs right now. It’s springtime. It’s perfect for planting right now.”
Sook went to the community garden where they were very happy to get our magic pellets. They never had any before and they have been there for 25 years.
She told them she is ready to start her herb garden and they said she could take some mint and oregano and holy basil back to plant in her garden. She was very excited to get started.
Pedro got out his real shovel, not a toy shovel, and started digging 12 inches down to bury his food scraps. He said: “It’s like our old food makes new food!” The worms were very happy for his things like all the parts of pineapple he buried. The crown, the core and the skins. They ate that for days and days.
The kids on the other side of him are Jayden and his little sister Imani. They never used to play together but now they really want to help take care of the cats too. So now there are four people taking turns feeding them.
People really love cats.
Jayden said to Pedro: “Do you think a peach tree could grow here in our backyard?”
Pedro said: “With magic pellets, ANYTHING can grow here!”
Jayden said: “Will you help me if I get one and need to dig a big hole? I know you have two good strong shovels. I think I can get us a small peach tree to plant.”
Pedro said: “Of course!”
Sook was shy but she went over to Pedro’s house and asked to borrow his shovel. He said: “You live on the other side of Sara? I will help you dig all the holes for your herb plants.” And he did.
Then he said to Sook, Jayden and Imani: “Come back when it gets dark because we catch fireflies with Sara and her brothers and sisters. We catch them and give them names and watch them glow up in the jars. Then we let them free so they can light up the sky for us.”
Boxer and Bella and I smelled noses with Emily and Hugo through the fence again today. They are getting used to being outside and they like it. Rabbits don’t like the sunshine part of the day, but we do like the early morning and before dark.
Boxer is always working on digging rabbit holes somewhere. Now he and Hugo both started digging under the fence. It means we will be able to visit them and they can visit us on our side.
They dig when no one is looking so it can just be our secret tunnel.
At night when Bella and Boxer and I were cleaning each other I heard my favorite thing in the whole world. It was the bugs outside singing for us. Chirp chirp chirp chirp chirp! When you hear hundreds of them is when it sounds really good. If you listen to them you can hear that they are listening to each other, taking turns chirping louder and softer. I do hear hundreds of them which means everything is going to be wonderful again.
I was just about to fall asleep when Bella said: “Can you tell that there is something very special about Emily right now?”
